Flash Floods In Nepal Wipe Out Food and Farmland
Sad news from Nepal. Every year the summer monsoons bring rain and flooding to people of Nepal. This year is particularly bad with days of heavy rain leading to flash floods that killed at least 173 people across Nepal, India and Bangladesh and much destruction of land and landslides. In Nepal search-and-rescue missions are still going on with more than 90 people dead. Important farmland has also been wiped out and many people are subsistence farmers relying on their crops for food.
Congratulations to Our 10th Grade SEE/SLC Graduates
Once again this year all of our children in 10th grade passed their SEE (formerly SLC) exam with flying colors! Congratulations to our graduates and thank you to their teachers, and our BSF staff for helping to make it happen. We had a combined celebration for the SEE (Secondary Education Examination) graduates & the Contact Centre graduates at the Contact Centre yesterday
Update: Our Trip To Nepal In March
My trip to Nepal in March was busy and productive! One of the best parts was staying in the office apartment in Sukedhara where several of the older kids are boarding. We shared many great meals of “dal bhat” prepared by the house supervisor, Sarita Basnet and the food was “meeto cha” (delicious).
It is a great joy to witness the older kids matriculating through our programs and becoming independent and more young children starting on this same path to success. This year we have five young, new kids who graduated from the Contact Center (our early childhood education day program) who need sponsors for school.
Helping Puja: A Magnalink Zip For Low Vision And Nystagmus
For Puja, the 18-year-old girl whom I sponsor in Nepal, reading is not so easy. She has low vision and nystagmus, a condition that causes her eyes to move rapidly back and forth in a horizontal direction. These visual problems result from albinism, a genetically inherited condition.
Despite these challenges, Puja has been very successful in school. Last year she passed her SLC exam with distinction and this year she is at the top of her 11th grade class at Pushpalal Memorial College where she is studying to become a teacher.
Our Focus On Counseling: Bimala Joshi
We are always looking for ways to improve our programs and help our kids succeed. So last year we added a second Program Director to the BSF staff and this year we have added a counselor, Bimala Joshi.
