Why Miles for Mitrata Kids?

… and why do we need your help?

If you have been a part of the Mitrata family for a long time, you may remember an event called the Climb for Himalaya Children (CHC). During this event, participants would spend months training and fundraising to end the event on the summit of Mount Rainier, Washington. Along with donations from our generous Contact Center sponsors, the CHC fully funded the Contact Center. Due to changing permits, insurance requirements, and other logistical issues, we were no longer able to continue the CHC event after 2019. This left us with a gap in Contact Center funding, until the creation of Miles for Mitrata Kids (M4MK) in 2020.

M4MK helps us close the gap in funding for our Contact Center program. We are in the midst of our fourth annual M4MK event and are on our way to reaching our goal of funding the Contact Center for another year. We have 28 registered participants now and hope to reach 50, so we need your help!

So far we have raised 69% of our goal of $30,000!

100% of donations go directly to our Contact Center program.

The Contact Center serves children who have been certified by Nepal’s government as economically poor. They have been identified by the Contact Center staff through their work in the local communities.

The child and family are interviewed and a home study is done to determine if they qualify for our help. Then, legal documents are established with the child guardian and a health and educational evaluation is performed.  Every effort is made to work closely with parents/guardians to form a partnership for helping their child.

The Contact Center provides an educational start in life and saves a child from a life of limited education, poor nutrition, illness, and poverty. Over half of Nepal’s population are children, and over 50% of children in Nepal are malnourished, with only 25% having access to adequate sanitation. Less than one third of girls attend high school, and child labor is pervasive.  Because they are victims of child labor or have parents who are itinerant workers, often children are not enrolled in school, and lack even basic school-readiness skills.

The Contact Center was created to serve these children. Here, children aged 3-10 years old are provided an educational foundation in a nurturing, loving environment, similar to the Montessori model. The children enter at the preschool level where they are taught basic skills including reading, writing, and an introduction to English. They are also provided with hygiene education, healthcare, and high-quality, protein-rich meals and healthy snacks. At any given time there is a waitlist of children who would like to be a part of the Contact Center program, as their families know just how impactful access to an education can be.

We would be unable to operate the Contact Center without our dedicated Contact Center sponsors, and the participants and donors of Miles for Mitrata Kids.

THAT is why Miles for Mitrata Kids is so important.

THAT is why your participation is important.

THAT is why your donations are important.

We can never thank you enough for all you do for the children of Nepal.

We truly cannot do it without you.
